David N. Judelson, former President and co-founder of Gulf+Western, played a pivotal role as strategic and financial partner to Biopure CEO Carl Rausch during the company's most transformative years. In 2001, The New York Times featured Biopure Corporation for its groundbreaking development of Hemopure โ an oxygen-carrying blood substitute derived from purified bovine hemoglobin. Often called the "Fifth Beatle" of Biopure, Judelson helped navigate complex regulatory, financial, and technological landscapes. Biopure remains the only company ever to bring both human and veterinary HBOCs to market. BHOC continues this legacy of innovation.
The U.S. Navy, Army, and Air Force partnered with Biopure to test Hemopure in trauma and battlefield medicine. Supported by Senator Edward M. Kennedy, this collaboration validated the technology's potential for saving lives in extreme conditions. Biopure remains the only company to bring both human and veterinary HBOCs to market. BHOC continues this mission for trauma and emergency care.
Global Blood Donation Crisis and the Need for Functional Resilience
On August 26, 2026, three major blood services โ Australian Red Cross Lifeblood, Canadian Blood Services, and NHS Blood and Transplant โ issued a joint call for more blood donors. This follows repeated warnings from the American Red Cross over the past two years about blood shortages, with the UK and other high-income countries also reporting declining supplies. A critical look at the global blood shortage crisis, the limits of donor recruitment, and the need for functional resilience in blood systems. Connects directly to BHOC's mission of supporting oxygen transport without donor dependency.
